AbstractABSTRACT: This study was carried out to verify the feasibility of using field spectral reflectance measurements to estimate corn crop yield growing under different row spacing (45 and 90 cm), plant population (60 and 80 thousands plants ha-1) and doses of nitrogen (0, 60,120 and 180 kg of N ha-1). The field experiment was conducted at the Agronomic Institute in Campinas, São Paulo State, during the 2001/2002 crop year. Canopy reflectance measurements were transformed into the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and related to final grain yield. No significant relationship between NDVI and grain yield was observed. Grain yield varied between 5 and 10 ton ha-1 and it is suspected that at this high production level the NDVI values are saturated; although leaf area index values varied between 2 and 4.5 which seems to be below saturation values for NDVI. No significant differences were observed for treatment effects on grain yield.
